Why So Many People Get Burned Buying One.

The R36S is the best-value retro handheld around. It's also the most copied — here's how we handle that.

The Clone Problem, Explained

Copied boards, dull screens and SD cards that die within two weeks. It's the number one complaint about this console — and it's nearly always down to the seller, not the design. Every unit we send gets a board check, a screen test and a properly flashed card before it's boxed.

How to Vet Any Seller

Ask for a photo of the motherboard through the battery compartment. Be suspicious of anything claiming built-in Bluetooth or Wi-Fi — a genuine R36S has neither. And treat a price far below everyone else's as the warning sign it usually is. That tip costs us nothing and could save you a rough week.

Analogue Sticks, Not Just a D-Pad

Dual 3D analogue sticks are what most handhelds at this price skip — and exactly what PS1 and N64 games need. Add a 4:3 IPS screen, the native shape of nearly every retro game, and you can see why the R36S outperforms devices costing three times as much.

Yours to Customise

It runs ArkOS, a Linux firmware with a big, active community. Add your own games, reorganise the library, tweak emulator settings or reflash it completely. Storage is a standard microSD, so the console grows with you instead of holding you back.

The Real Reason

You Still Hear the Start-Up Jingle.

The cartridge you blew on. The level you never finished. The controller your brother always grabbed first. Those games haven't gone anywhere — they're just stuck on hardware in the loft, under a tangle of cables, next to a TV nobody owns any more.

The R36S puts every one of them back in your hands, in something that fits in a coat pocket.

Fits Your Real Day

Twenty Minutes on a Train Is Plenty.

Modern games want a whole evening. A commute, a lunch break or a delayed flight isn't an evening — and that's exactly the kind of time retro games were made for.

Switch it on, pick a game, clear a level, put it away. No installs, no updates, no 30GB patch. The console is ready before your earbuds have even connected.

Straight Out of the Box

Charged, Loaded, Ready to Go.

The card arrives flashed and organised, the case is in the box, and the battery comes with charge. Switch it on and your library is already there — sorted by console, ready to browse.

Nothing to download, no account to create, no firmware to install before you play. That's the whole setup — and it's why it makes such a great present.

A Gift That Lands

The Present That Gets Switched On Straight Away.

Most gifts are unwrapped, admired and put down. This one gets unwrapped, switched on — and then nobody sees them for an hour. Which is a much better result.

Birthdays, Christmas, Father's Day, or just because. Every game they loved as a kid, back in their hands, on a screen that fits in one.

What is the R36S?

The R36S is a pocket-sized retro handheld that plays classic games from consoles like the NES, SNES, Game Boy, GBA, Sega Mega Drive and PlayStation 1. It has a 3.5-inch IPS screen, dual analogue sticks, real physical buttons and runs ArkOS, a Linux-based system. It comes with thousands of preloaded games, making it one of the most affordable ways to play the classics at home or on the move. Some N64 and PSP games run too, but performance varies from game to game.

How do I know I'm getting a genuine R36S and not a fake?

Clones are the biggest issue with this console — copied boards, washed-out screens and SD cards that fail within days. Every console we sell is checked before it ships: genuine motherboard, screen test, and a properly flashed and verified SD card. Comparing sellers? Three quick checks: ask for a photo of the motherboard through the battery compartment, be wary of any listing that claims built-in Bluetooth or Wi-Fi (a genuine R36S has neither), and treat a price far below everyone else's as a red flag, not a bargain.

How long does delivery take?

We process orders within 2–3 business days and every parcel is tracked. UK, US and EU orders usually arrive in 5–7 business days; the rest of the world in 7–14. You'll get a tracking link by email as soon as your parcel leaves us. If it looks stuck, email us your order number and we'll chase it for you.

What's included in the box?

The console, a preloaded microSD card, a USB-C charging cable and a protective carry case. That's everything — nothing else to buy, nothing to download. The battery arrives with some charge so you can play right away.

What games can the R36S play?

Around 20 systems, including NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Mega Drive, Master System, Neo Geo, PlayStation 1 and a big arcade collection. Games are sorted by console, so you browse instead of searching.

Is the R36S worth buying?

For anything up to the PS1 era, it's the best-value handheld you can buy — ask anyone who owns a few. You get dual analogue sticks and a true 4:3 IPS screen at a price where most rivals give you a d-pad and a stretched widescreen. Where it's not worth it: if you need flawless N64, Dreamcast or PSP, go for something more powerful. We'd rather say so than take your money.

Can you add more games to the R36S?

Yes. It uses a standard microSD card, so you can add files to the current card or upgrade to a bigger one. ArkOS has one simple folder per console, which makes adding and organising games easy, and there are loads of community guides if you want to go further. Please only add games you're legally entitled to own.

My screen is black when I turn it on — is it broken?

Almost certainly not. A black screen on the R36S is nearly always an SD card that's corrupted or not seated properly. Take the card out of the side slot, push it back in firmly and restart. If the console hasn't been used for a while, charge it for 30 minutes and try again. Still stuck? Contact us and we'll walk you through it — or send you a replacement card for free.

What is the R36S battery life?

Around four to five hours of real play, depending on the game — longer on 8-bit and 16-bit titles, shorter on PS1 and heavier games. Screen brightness makes a difference too. The 3500mAh battery is removable, which matters more than you'd think: when it eventually wears out, you replace the battery, not the console.

Does the R36S have Bluetooth?

Not built in — and no genuine R36S does. It has a USB OTG port, so you can plug in a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi dongle for wireless controllers or headphones. Handy authenticity tip: if a seller claims built-in Bluetooth on an R36S, it's almost certainly not a real one.

What is the R36S screen size and quality?

A 3.5-inch IPS panel, 640×480, in 4:3. That 4:3 shape is the whole point — it's the original format of almost every retro game, so nothing gets stretched, squashed or boxed in like on a widescreen handheld. IPS keeps the colours accurate even at an angle. A dull or heavily tinted screen is one of the clearest signs of a clone.

How does the R36S compare to other retro handhelds?

Versus the Miyoo Mini: the R36S gives you dual analogue sticks and a bigger screen — a big deal for PS1 and 3D games. Versus the RG35XX: usually cheaper for a similar experience. Versus devices costing three or four times more: you give up N64, Dreamcast and PSP performance. If you mostly play 8-bit to PS1 — and most people do — the R36S does the job for a fraction of the price.

What if my console arrives faulty?

We'll replace it or refund you in full. Just contact us before sending anything back — a black screen is nearly always the SD card and we can usually sort it the same day, without you posting a thing. Every order also comes with a 30-day return if you simply change your mind. Email pixelcade.support@gmail.com with your order number and a quick description, and we'll take care of it. No interrogation, no hoops.
